During the past decades, the Emirate of Dubai experienced great growth in many sectors which include the automobile premises. Due to this, businesses engaged in the maintenance of vehicles had grown significantly creating huge amounts of oily wastewater which if not properly treated creates many accompanying problems such as overloading of existing Jebel Ali Hazardous Waste Treatment Facility (JAHWTF), increase in disposal costs, marine pollution, etc.
This guideline is applicable for businesses that generate oily wastewater from use of petroleum products to effectively and economically treat wastewater to an acceptable level for discharge by installation of a gravity oil-water separator. Because oil and water do not mix well, and as oil "floats" due to being lighter than water, effective treatment can be achieved if the correct oil-water separator is installed, routine maintenance is adhered to.The Local Order No. 61 of 1991 on the Environment Protection Regulations in the Emirate of Dubai requires all premises generating wastewater to comply with the effluent Standards by providing means of treatment of their wastewater before discharging.
